What Reddit actually bought, used and would buy again this week

Nine picks people put real use behind, seven smaller buys and three things to check before you spend: a shoe-cleaning powder, Finland-made scissors, a coffee maker you can keep repairing, a $9 shoehorn and a salt gun for flies.

01
OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover Powder 5 lb tub

Cleaning · Owner report

OxiClean Versatile powder

Use it when: You have washable fabric shoes or sandals that a wipe no longer fixes. The poster cleaned a favorite pair with the powder, water and an old toothbrush and says they will keep buying it; a follow-up reply describes wetting the shoes, scrubbing gently and rinsing well.

Skip it when: The shoes are leather, suede or otherwise not washable; a reply points out these were cloth. Don't leave it soaking in a porcelain sink: another reader says a long hot soak ate through their sink's enamel. Wear gloves and follow the tub's directions.

“It will be a product I buy for the rest of my life!” Source: r/CleaningTips
View on Amazon The post says OxiClean powder without naming the variant; the Versatile 5 lb tub is our buying example. It also appeared in Issue 04 for a stain soak; this week's reason is shoe cleaning and a stated repurchase.
02
Fiskars Classic Universal scissors 21 cm with orange handles

Household tools · Discussion pick

Fiskars Classic Universal scissors, 21 cm

Choose it when: You want one pair of everyday paper-and-fabric scissors that lasts. The poster bought the Finland-made Classic 21 cm; the top answer called the orange-handled line the classic workhorse, and a reply described a family still using their parents' pair.

Skip it when: You are left-handed, which one reply flagged, or plan to cut wire. Another reply says Fiskars makes orange-handled scissors in both China and Finland and found the Finland blades noticeably better, so check the blade marking. A third says the lifetime warranty is hard to use.

“Those orange handled ones are the classic workhorse, they last forever if you don't use them on wire or something dumb.” Source: r/BuyItForLife
View on Amazon Same model as the box in the post: Classic Universal 21 cm, right-handed (1075032). Fiskars' cheaper US 8-inch orange-handled scissors are a different listing.
03
Milliard food-grade citric acid powder 2 lb bag

Cleaning · Owner report

Citric acid powder for limescale

Use it when: You have mineral buildup in a toilet or shower and want a cheap, single-ingredient descaler. The poster left it to soak during a workday and came back to a clean bowl; the top reply dissolves a few spoons in warm water in a spray bottle for the shower.

Skip it when: The surface is marble or other acid-sensitive stone. Two replies warn that acid etches marble and one got streaks they could never remove. Don't mix it with bleach.

“Left it to soak for 8h while I went to work and came back to the toilet as good as new!” Source: r/CleaningTips
View on Amazon The post names the ingredient, not a brand. This plain 2 lb bag is our buying example; any pure citric acid powder does the same job.
04
Lumie Bodyclock Rise 100 wake-up light

Bedroom · Discussion pick

Lumie sunrise alarm clock

Consider it when: Dark mornings and a jarring alarm make getting up hard. In an under-$200 thread, the commenter said the most basic Lumie, which brightens over half an hour, turned them into a morning person.

Skip it when: You share the bed with someone who wakes later. One reply stopped using theirs because a partner couldn't sleep with the light on. Another gets a similar effect from a roughly $15 scheduled smart bulb.

“I got the most basic Lumie and it’s been life changing.” Source: r/AskReddit
View on Amazon "Most basic Lumie" is not a model name. The Rise 100 is Lumie's current entry-level sunrise clock and our buying example, not confirmed as the commenter's unit.
05
Moccamaster KBGV Select 10-cup coffee maker in matte black

Kitchen appliances · Discussion pick

Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select

Consider it when: You want a drip coffee maker you can keep repairing instead of replacing. In a thread about which of today's products will still work in 20 years, the top reply's test was replacement parts, and it named Technivorm as a maker still selling parts for machines it stopped making in the 1990s.

Skip it when: You want espresso, a built-in grinder or a cheap machine. The reply is about long-term parts support, not a taste test, and the Select costs about $360. Moccamaster also appeared in Issue 01 for a thrift-store find; this week's reason is repairability.

“For example, technivorm (coffee machine company) sells parts for machines they haven’t sold since the 90’s” Source: r/BuyItForLife
View on Amazon The reply names the brand, not a model. The KBGV Select is Moccamaster's current core 10-cup machine and our buying example; color is your choice.
06
The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Exfoliating Toner bottle

Personal care · Discussion pick

Glycolic acid toner

Try it when: You want one cheap acid for underarm odor, rough heels or bumpy arm skin. The commenter swipes it on after showering and before bed and called it close to miraculous for about $15; another reply decants The Ordinary's big bottle into a spray bottle for the whole body.

Skip it when: You just shaved: a reply warns that acid on freshly shaved underarms burns intensely. Skip it on broken or very sensitive skin, patch-test first, and follow the label's sunscreen advice for acid exfoliants.

“Swipe some under your pits after a shower and you won't smell anymore.” Source: r/AskReddit
View on Amazon The comment names the ingredient. The Ordinary 7% toner is the bottle a reply in the same thread uses, and our buying example.
07
Philips Sonicare 4100 electric toothbrush in white

Personal care · Discussion pick

Philips Sonicare 4100

Choose it when: You want an electric toothbrush without paying for features you won't use. The commenter moved down from a much pricier model to the 4100, paid $40 at Target, and didn't miss the extras.

Skip it when: You want a visual pressure sensor or a stronger motor. One reply believes the 4000 series uses a weaker motor and suggests the 5950 or 6700 instead. This is a small, single-owner signal, ranked last for that reason.

“Especially since the Sonicare 4100 is like $40-50. I got mine for $40 at Target in March.” Source: r/AskReddit
View on Amazon Exact series. The white one-head pack is our pick of the colors; the commenter paid $40 at Target in March.
08
BUG-A-SALT 3.0 salt gun in yellow

Home & garden · Discussion pick

BUG-A-SALT 3.0

Get it when: Flies or other slow bugs drive you up the wall and you'd rather not spray. The commenter called it the best fly swatter they've owned, and a reply used one on spotted lanternflies by the dozen.

Skip it when: You need to clear a large swarm fast; one fan still reaches for an electric fly swatter for that. It fires table salt, so expect to sweep up afterwards, and keep it pointed away from people and pets.

“Bug-a-salt. The best insect/fly swatter i have ever had.” Source: r/AskReddit
View on Amazon The comment names the brand only. The 3.0 is the current standard model and our buying example.
09
IKEA OMTÄNKSAM extra-long metal shoehorn in anthracite

Home · Discussion pick

IKEA OMTÄNKSAM long shoehorn

Get it when: You put on boots or stiff shoes every day and are tired of bending down. The commenter says it makes that easy at any age; a reply keeps one by each entrance and re-bought it first after moving continents.

Skip it when: You expect it to last forever. One reply says their plastic shoehorn broke after a few years and another says these break too; the comment named the metal one, so check that is what you buy.

“Ikea extra-long metal shoehorn. Don't care how old you are, it makes putting on your boots a breeze.” Source: r/AskReddit
View at IKEA The comment didn't give the product name; OMTÄNKSAM is the extra-long metal shoehorn IKEA sells (31½ in, $8.99 on IKEA US when checked).

Smaller-community finds

Quick mentions

Smaller threads worth knowing about. Where a discussion compared two products, both stay together as one item.

GEARWRENCH 9535D wrench-to-bit adapter Turns a half-inch box wrench into a ratcheting bit driver; the poster used it to reach hex bolts in a cramped space during a blow-off valve replacement. It is about reach, not torque, as a reply put it. The poster's $13 was a past price, and Amazon currently lists it as shipping later.

Mountain Hardwear warranty repair An owner sent in shorts at least eight years old with a separating fly zipper, paid outbound shipping only, and got the same pair back with a new zipper in under two weeks. One owner's experience, not a service promise; Mountain Hardwear warns US claims can take 8–10 weeks in winter.

LOOP GEAR SK05 Pro 2, red Bought for a camping trip by someone who had been using a phone light; another owner of two dozen lights calls it their favorite. It is a large, heavy light for a pocket, which one long-term owner says keeps it out of everyday carry.

RovyVon Aurora A1 An EDC owner who trimmed their whole carry says the $18 A1 does the job without stepping up to the A8. Generation isn't stated in the post; the linked listing is the current G4.

Gyeon Mohs ceramic coating A one-year check-in: still beading after foam washes, with one slow spot brought back by a topper spray. A reply notes the owner also used Elixir, so not all of the water beading can be credited to Mohs. The post doesn't say whether it was the EVO version; the linked listing is.

Kamik winter boots The top answer to "my 30-year Sorels died, what now?" was Kamik. Two more owners said the same: one six years into daily dog walks and snow shovelling, needing only new insoles, and one nearly ten years in snowy mountains. The six-year owner adds they live where roads are sanded, not salted. Nobody named a model; the linked NationPlus is our example, so choose your size.

TOTO Washlet bidet seat Named as the bathroom upgrade that beat everything else in a thread about upgrades that mattered more than expected; a reply notes Costco carries one. It is an electric seat, so you need an outlet near the toilet. The model wasn't named; the linked C5 is our example.

Do not bury the downside

Watch outs

Warnings and owner counterexamples that change who should buy or what to check.

One buyer's quality-control and support problems

Thursday Boot Company leather jacket

A buyer of a $360 leather jacket says it arrived with a ripped sleeve lining and a chemical smell that days of airing didn't clear, and that support asked for half a dozen photos before an exchange. The top replies are brand-reputation complaints rather than more jacket reports. This is one unit, not a defect rate; if you order, inspect the lining and smell on arrival and keep the packaging until you're sure.

Check the rated branch size first

Fiskars pole-saw pruner head

A buyer says the pruning head snapped on a dead branch less than a week after purchase and blames a cast-metal body. Replies push back: dead wood is harder to cut than green wood, and the top reply jokes that the branch was simply too big for a pruning tool. The model isn't named. Check the cutting capacity and keep the receipt; this is one report, not a brand failure rate, and it says nothing about Fiskars scissors.

Find out where warranty service happens before you buy

Miele Guard L1 Cat & Dog

About six months in, the owner found a crack in the base over a wheel. Miele asked them to take it to a certified technician an hour away and then denied the claim as drop damage. One reply says an in-person inspection is normal for a body crack on a $1,000 machine; another says Miele should have sent a shipping label. What caused the crack is unproven. If you're considering one, check how far your nearest authorized service point is.

What this list is

The answer first, with the receipts still attached.

Every pick starts with a real discussion from inside this issue's window. I link the passage that made the product worth your attention, then add a buying path and the caveat to check before you spend money. A direct recommendation is someone recommending that exact product; a discussion pick surfaced inside a wider thread; an owner report comes from someone describing long-term use. These are useful leads, not guarantees. Read the research method.
